Road Weather Alert
Statewide Road Snow
Forecast Period: 6 PM Wednesday through 6 PM Thursday
Text Updated: 10 AM Wednesday, January 7th, 2026
A cold front will move through the state starting late Wednesday night and pushing southward throughout Thursday. While some lower elevation rain showers will be around Wednesday afternoon and evening, a changeover to all snow is expected late in the evening, with areas of snow across Northern Utah to start. Snow pushes south overnight and will be heavy at times in the mountains and canyons.
The main urban corridor road snow concerns will be after midnight and through Thursday morning, including during the morning commute. While snowfall rates are not expected to be heavy, this will be most of the Wasatch Front’s first snow event, so longer commute times should be anticipated.
While the most widespread snow tapers off across northern Utah mid-morning Thursday, snow will be increasing in coverage and intensity across much of southern Utah, particularly across Cove Fort to Cedar City. Road snow impacts are expected going into the afternoon with heavy mountain road snow all day.
Widespread road snow and slick conditions can be expected across most interstates throughout the state through Thursday morning.
While this storm starts winding down Thursday night across Northern Utah, there is a chance that all lakes create continuing scattered lake effect snow showers. The main concern will be areas south/southeast of the Great Salt Lake and Utah lake, where light road snow and icy spots will remain a concern. Road snow concerns will also increase Thursday night across much of southeast Utah.
An updated RWA graphic can be expected on Thursday to cover these concerns.
Motorists are advised to use caution and TravelWise. Motorists using canyon and mountain routes should be aware Traction Laws may be enforced.
